Sagarmatha (the forehead of the sky) the world highest peak is known as Mt. Everest all over the world. With the South face recognized to lie in Nepal and the North face in China’s autonomous state Tibet Mt Everest lies at an altitude of 8848m. Mt Everest was first measured in 1856 during the Great Trigonometric Survey of British India government the then known as Peak XV certified with the height of 8840 just 8m off from the current value.

The Everest expedition is one of the world’s greatest physical and mental challenges which has fascinated mountaineers all over the world since the European climbers discovered that Tibet was open to outsiders in 1920. The South Col route to Mt Everest on Nepal’s side is the route taken by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa who were the first to climb Everest successfully on the 29 May 1953 thus became world’s famous heroes of the adventure climbing. Since then Everest receives around 1000 summit attempts every year.
